Morgan Miller

Political director, Iowa State Education Association

Age: 33

Husband: Joe Nehring

Accomplishments that make you deserving of being a Forty Under 40:

  • As the ISEA political director, I work with ISEA members and staff to advance the legislative and political goals of the organization through member and community engagement.

  • I have been actively involved in Iowa's labor movement the last 12 years, promoting pro-labor candidates for office, from the local to national level.

  • I also mentor fellow women in politics and labor and serve on the Iowa Women in Trades Board.

  • I am a member of the 2023-24 Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute class.

What's your biggest passion, and why?

Making connections! I love learning about new people and issues. My experience working in politics has taught me how to navigate and collaborate with people who have different viewpoints and opinions. I like finding common ground and working toward shared goals, even in challenging and contentious environments.

What are your goals in your role at work?

To make politics local again. These days, politics often feels hyperpartisan and nationalized. I want the educators I work with to understand how accessible our elected officials are, while at the same time, I want our policymakers focused on meeting the needs of their constituents over out-of-state influences.

What are your goals in a role outside of work?

I want to foster my responsibility to my community. I have personally been lifted up by so many colleagues, neighbors and friends to get where I am today. I want to pass on that same support to those in our community that are struggling or need a hand.

Tell us about an experience or memory that influenced how you see the world or what you want to do in life.

I grew up in a paycheck-to-paycheck household where to get by, we relied on social services. This experience has shaped me into someone who profoundly believes that to thrive, all people deserve basic needs like health care, education and housing.

What are your aspirations for the future?

Working with educators and public school staff, I see firsthand the immense needs of our public education system in Iowa. Iowa was once nationally recognized for our public schools. My hope for our future is that our state once again embraces our motto of a foundation in education.

What's one piece of advice you'd give to a young professional?

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed individuals can change the world. In fact, it's the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead. This quote was passed on by a University of Iowa professor in college, reminding us that changemaking is in our hands.

What is one thing you would like to see Central Iowa leaders address, and why?

As someone who grew up in Central Iowa and moved back in my 20s, I want our leaders to focus on making Des Moines a place that's attractive to young professionals and families. We can do this by being inclusive, by investing in public education and by investing in natural resources, like trails and activities, that foster a strong sense of community.

Hobbies: Orangetheory Fitness, biking and reading a good romance novel!
