Tell us some of your proudest accomplishments or accolades.

  • I am a leader within my organization and am responsible for overseeing our self-perform work operations, which include concrete, carpentry and demolition scopes.

  • I am committed to fostering the next generation of construction professionals through involvement at Iowa State and the DBIA scholarship program.

  • I am a passionate volunteer for several organizations and an active board member for the American Red Cross.

What’s an experience or memory that influenced how you saw the world or what you wanted to do in life?

As a kid, my parents always took my siblings and me along to their volunteer events. Even though we complained sometimes, it laid the foundation for the importance of giving back that I have carried into my adult years. I grew to understand that my parents had learned from their parents, and I have already begun to teach the same values to my kids as well.

What’s one decision you made early in your career that had an outsized impact?

After completing my degree in structural engineering, I went into that field. After a couple of years, I found that I missed being close to the “action” of construction and made the decision to move back into general contracting. I still use my background in engineering daily and am thankful for that experience and knowledge. However, I am happy I followed my passion and moved back into a position to do what I love.

What are your aspirations for the future?

I am new in my role as the self-perform leader at Ryan. I am excited to help grow our operation and make a significant impact on our overall business. I plan to continue my volunteer work and teach my two sons the importance of giving back in the communities where we work and play.

What are you still working on to improve as a leader?

Mentorship. I am working to actively recognize situations where teachable moments exist and making a conscious effort to pause and mentor future leaders real-time. My current and past mentors have done the same for me and I recognize the importance of paying it forward.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to a young professional?

Be confident in who you are and what you know, but also, don’t be afraid to admit when you don’t know. The balance between the two will earn you respect among your teammates.

What’s one regular habit that’s made you successful?

Continually seeking new opportunities to grow both professionally and in the community. Once I hear of an opportunity that’s of interest to me, I take the initiative to express my interest and ask how I can help.

What’s one outdated way of thinking that you’d like to challenge?

Gender stereotypes related to careers. I was self-conscious about my decision to pursue a degree/career in construction because of the gender stereotype. Initially I felt out of place, but as I met strong female mentors, they helped me to realize that I could be successful in the field that I am passionate about.

What is one issue you would like to see Central Iowa leaders address, and why?

Access to quality, affordable child care for families. Iowa has one of the highest rates for workforce participation among parents in the country. Access to care is essential for families and helps to foster school readiness through early childhood success.

What’s one fun fact about you?

When I was 10, I starred in a local TV commercial for Blank Children’s Hospital telling the story of how I broke my arm on my birthday.

Hobbies: Boating on the Mississippi River; woodworking and home projects; spending time with family.

What is one word that best describes you?

Passionate.

What’s one food you think people must try in the Des Moines area?

Cinnamon roll from the Crouse Cafe.

What’s the funniest or most surprising thing that’s happened to you recently?

My husband and I learned what it is like to go from double team to one-on-one coverage with the birth of our second son in November.

What’s your favorite tradition to participate in locally?

I LOVE the Iowa State Fair. My family and I usually go several times to make sure we have enough time to try all the new fair foods. Although I always save room for a hot beef sundae.

What is your go-to snack?

Dried mangos (from Costco).
