Legal director
ACLU of Iowa

Age: 39

Partner: Joe Austen

Mentor: I have been fortunate to work with a number of amazing people in various capacities throughout my life. I can’t really pinpoint any single person that I would be able to accurately describe as a mentor.

Four reasons she is a Forty: Rita Bettis Austen is the legal director of the ACLU of Iowa. She oversees the legal program’s efforts to promote and protect the basic rights and freedoms of all Iowans through litigation in state and federal courts. In this role, she has brought cases championing voting rights, freedom of speech and religion, racial justice, gender equality, reproductive freedom, LGBTQ equality, immigrants’ rights, fair sentencing for juveniles, and the rights of the accused.

What are your goals in your role at your company?

To markedly advance freedom and equality for all Iowans through litigation and through the ACLU of Iowa’s integrated advocacy work.

What are your goals for your community involvement?

Outside of my own job, my biggest goals are to spend time with and stay connected to family and friends, and support the amazing work of others in our community.

What's your biggest passion, and why?

I want to live in a world where all people are treated fairly and with respect, and have the opportunity to thrive. That passion translates seamlessly into my job at the ACLU of Iowa.

What is it that drives you?

I feel very cognizant that life is short, and the resources of energy, focus, and time are limited. I feel incredibly fortunate that the time I spend at work is directed toward things that are meaningful to me – I see the positive impact of our work for Iowans daily.

What are your future aspirations?

To continue to expand the impact of our work at the ACLU of Iowa. I am grateful to be in the position that I am to work daily with some of the best litigators, policy experts, communications and other advocacy professionals in Iowa and in the country.

Three hobbies: My dad was a chef, and I’d like to think I’m a pretty good cook; running; avid reader.

Fun Fact: I am teaching myself to play guitar – or trying to, anyway. So far, I’m not very good.

ONE word: Diligent.

What is your wish for the Central Iowa business community?

The Iowa business community as a whole has shown leadership in protecting civil rights in our state. For example, business groups helped block anti-transgender legislation, and supported rights for pregnant workers. Iowans are counting on that continuing – and growing.
